World Cup 2010 – Argentina edge out Germany

Gonzalo Higuain’s late first half strike was enough to secure Diego Maradona’s Argentina an edgy 1-0 victory away to Germany at the Allianz-Arena.
A fixture that pitted two of world football’s genuine powerhouses against each other in a World Cup year really should have served up a better spectacle than the dour first half in Munich.
German functionality just about shaded the first period for the hosts but a moment of genuine quality from Benfica man Angel Di Maria set up Gonzalo Higuain to give the visitors a scarcely deserved lead heading into the break.
The hosts again had the territorial advantage come the second period, but, distinctly lacking creativity, Joachim Low’s side laboured for large periods.
They rallied as the game approached the final quarter but were largely reduced to efforts from distance and the men from South America, after a torrid qualifying campaign, came away from Germany with a more than credible result.
