Lemaire and Dunaden claims Melbourne Cup

FLEMINGTON, Victoria — The crowd was intense, you can feel the thrilling atmosphere, you can hear the wild cheers, the boos and the nail biting finish shook all of the people who witnessed the Melbourne Cup yesterday.
Jockey Christophe Lemaire with horse Dunaden raced to the finish beating Michael Rodd and horse Red Cadeaux by the shortest margin in front of a crowd of approximately 105, 974.
The margin was just a nose, if you look closely at the picture Dunaden’s nose is ahead or was the first to step on the line while Red Codeaux is an inch or two away.
Dunaden was originally sold for just $1500 at the Arqana breeding stock sale in France 2006. He became the second successive French winner of the Melbourne Cup following Americain’s success last 2010.
Americain just finished fourth in this year’s tournament while Lucas Cranach was in the third spot.
Dunaden’s jockey Lemaire just arrived from Japan to Flemington to ride the horse and led it to victory after Craig Williams who was banned to join the race. Lemaire was cheered and praised by the crowd as he shed tears when the judges gave him the verdict.
“It’s incredible – it’s a great moment for me,” the French said after his victory. “I was a bit anxious. I knew it was very close. I feel sorry for Craig. He’s a good friend of mine.”
“I know what it is like being in an armchair watching your winners. Two years ago I had a fall before the arc. I broke my collarbone and they rode eight winners. Winning the Melbourne Cup in this country is a dream,†said Lemaire.
Dunaden has a habit of waiting for rivals and when Red Cadeaux got close to him, Lemaire didn’t panic and trusted his horse to dash at full speed.
“Dunaden is very generous, he was still moving forward,” he said.
