Lakers escapes Boston in the Garden
BOSTON, MA — Los Angeles Lakers’ Pau Gasol rejected the puback of Ray Allen to escape the TD garden with a 88-87 victory over the Boston Celtics.
Boston has the ball in the closing seconds, Paul Pierce pulled a fadeaway jumper but missed, Allen tried took the offensive rebound and attempted a putback but Gasol’s box out led him to block the last shot of the game.
“You just got to play until the clock runs out and that’s what I try to do. I’ve been in situations before in my career where you just freeze and you just catch yourself looking at the ball and somebody makes a play and you end up losing a game. So tonight I’m glad that I was able to continue playing until the end,” said Pau Gasol on his game-saving block.
Gasol had a double double with 25 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Lakers. Kobe Bryant had a game-high 27 points for 11 of 24 in the field. Andrew Bynum also had a double double performance with 16 points and 17 rebounds to end the Celtics’ five game winning streak.
Allen scored 22 points to lead the Celtics’ scorers for 9 of 20 shooting in the field. Paul Pierce who missed his chance in the last ticks of the final stretch ended with 18 points for 7 of 18 field goals.
“We get one rebound down there at the end of regulation we give ourselves a great chance at winning. Defensive rebounding was a big emphasis for us coming into the game and we just didn’t do a good job tonight,” said Pierce.
Rajon Rondo had 14 points while Kevin Garnett added 12 points for Boston Celtics who ended their winning streak in the hands of their west rival the Lakers.
The Celtics will try to bounce back when they visit the Toronto Raptors on Sunday while the Lakers will try to win back to back games as they face the New York Knicks this Friday.
