Sharapova, Kvitova powers through
MELBOURNE, Australia — Maria Sharapova cruised through the last 16 of the Australian Open by defeating Angelique Kerber in straight sets, 6-1 6-2.
Sharapova was merciless in her attacks, it was the first time that the Russian lost two games in the tournament. It looked like she is in her great form fit to be challenge for defending champion Kim Clijters.
Kerber was actually a semi finalist of the US Open last year, however her abilities and her position did not threaten the former world no. 1.
“It was a really good first set and she stepped it up in the second,” Sharapova said.
“She was in the semis at the US Open and she has been on this stage before so I knew she could produce some good tennis.
“The second set was certainly closer than the scoreline suggests.”
The second seed Petra Kvitova had an early rest when her opponent Maria Kirilenko only played seven games before retiring.
This would actually result to a good match however Kirilenko’s upper left leg injury let her slow down her pace. The Russian felt to herself that she could no longer move on so she decided to stop the match.
Kvitova will now meet the winner of Ana Ivanovic and Vania King in round four.
